The word sporran is actually Scottish Gaelic for 'purse' and was originally a practical item but has
since become a decorative item for highland dress. It is worn at the front of the kilt, and as the traditional kilt does
not have pockets, the sporran served a practical use for containing money or other necessary items such
as a hip flask.
Dress sporrans
usually have chrome or silver cantles over the top of them, with a set stone, jewel or emblem on the cantle. They tend to be made from
animal fur such as seal and rabbit. Day sporrans are typically leather and smaller than dress sporrans and have three
leather tassles and celtic knots embossed in the leather.
Day sporrans that are needed for everyday modern use are becoming very popular- rather than traditional styles
for weddings. Therefore we offer both dress sporrans
and day sporrans in our online store at very competitive prices, along with chain for fitting. Not only are
they affordable, but they are Scottish made, so they have the authenticity and quality you will most likely be looking for.
